Stages of Finding the Right Keywords Using Google’s Keyword Planner and Other Tools

We want our website to rank 1 on Google. But not for just any keyword. Not only to get visitors…But hopefully we get the perfect visitor target. Those who are willing to shop and use the products/services we offer. For that, you must understand how to find the perfect keyword. I emphasize again … the perfect keyword.

Careful.

In order to get beautiful keywords, we can’t just use Google Keyword Planner. There are a few more steps you have to do so that your website’s keyword strategy is perfect. Everything is explained in this guide.

Reasons why Google Keyword Planner is not enough

Google Keyword Planner is the cause of the third error…mistakes that are inherently practiced and taught. That is using keywords that are too like .

keyword tools

See the similarity of all the keywords above. Believe it or not, this can cause your website to be penalized. you see, Google Keyword Planner is not a tool for keyword research, but for Google AdWords users (Google’s PPC advertising service). The results issued do not vary.

If you only rely on Google Keyword Planner, then the content you create will not vary. That’s why this tool is not good for finding keywords.

Please do the following steps to search for keywords in the right way.

The Right Way to Search for Keywords

1. Get some initial inspiration from the main keywords

You currently only have one keyword, namely the category/industry of your own website. For example, a website that sells airplane tickets has the keyword “sell airplane tickets”. This one is not enough.

If you enter one of these keywords in a tool like Google Keyword Planner, then you make a mistake similar to the one above.

So here’s what we do: Think of several keywords that are related to the main keyword earlier, then separate them based on search intents .

The more the better. Pay particular attention to the “informational” chapter. These keywords are not about airplane tickets (the main keyword), but the relationship is still very friendly. When someone visits your website through informational keywords, they may not shop directly…

…but next time when they need, they will come to you. Therefore, informational keywords are useful for finding buyers in the long term. Low value but really useful.

If you are confused in finding ideas, try answering the following questions:

Informational:

    • What problems does your target market have?
    • What makes them interested in buying your product/service?
    • What problems do you solve through your product/service?
    • What else do they want to know besides your product?

Commercial investigations:

    • What was their opinion before making an option?
    • What information are they looking for before buying? (specs, benefits, price)
    • How do they compare to similar products? (best, vs, review)
    • Are there any adjectives that describe your product/service? (cheap, quality, blue, red)

Transactional:

    • Imagine you want to shop for your product online, what do you want to search from Google?
    • Do you provide discounts, freebies, and the like?

In the image above, there are keywords whose sentences are not complete (for example: the best tourist destinations in). We’ll now dig into the full model in step two.

2. Explore complementary keywords at KeywordTool.io

You surely have seen something like this: It’s called Google AutoComplete. Google will automatically complete the keywords you write when searching. This is what we use to dig for keywords.

The problem is, looking for one by one would take too long…we have to write “tourist area in a”, “recreational area in b”, “recreational area in c”, to Z. Fortunately there is KeywordTool.io

KeywordTool.io is a tool that functions to get keywords derived from the main keywords that you enter according to Google Suggest. This tool automatically performs repeated searches for you. The method is easy…

…enter keywords into the fields offered:

KeywordToolioDon’t forget to set the country and language. After that press the magnifying glass button.

The result is similar to this:

search result KeywordToolio

400 keywords in an instant from 1 keyword! Next, click the “Copy All” button at the top right. Then paste (CTRL + V) in notepad, Excel, or something else, it’s up to you.

Repeat for all the keywords earlier. Finally, combine all the keywords in the same intent into the same notepad.

3. Get search volume in Google Keyword Planner

Next, armed with keywords from KeywordTool.io we head to GKP . Please create an account first if this is your first time. After that, click on the second option from the menu.

Paste the keywords that you copied earlier. Don’t forget to change country and language.

Click the “Get search volume” button.

You will be shown the search volume per month for each keyword.

After that, download it in Excel CSV form or save it to Google Drive if you use Google Sheets.

Once all the keywords are entered, you should have 3 spreadsheets files for each intent.

Save these three files for the next chapter.

Another tool for keyword research

At this point, our keyword search stage is actually over, but there are a number of tools that you might need to know to make the research process easier. The following tools will make your keyword research process easier.

1. SEMRush – snooping on keywords from other websites

This keyword search stage is actually not difficult. But many people are stuck at stage 1 (considering derivative keywords). The reason, the reason is that they don’t know what keywords to use.

In addition, many are also wrong. I often receive emails from PIM readers asking for corrections and suggestions regarding the list of keywords they make. A lot went wrong. This is where SEMRush can help you.

By using SEMrush, you can “peek” high-value keywords from your rival websites. Your competitors are struggling to do research. We just have a peek. The method is very easy: Enter your rival’s website address.

After that, scroll down to this chapter:

To make the keywords more complete, click the “View full report” button. Look on the far left. These are the keywords that we can use. In one just click it, we are able to receive thousands of high-value keywords.

There is more…This data is very useful…

If we evaluate this website address again at SEMrush, then we will get more and more high-value keywords. Thus, your keyword research process will be many times easier.

2. Long Tail Pro – search for hidden valuable keywords

I will first explain briefly the discourse long tail keywords :

In essence, long tail keywords are long keywords whose level of competition is much lower than short tail keywords. (more details will be explained in section 4)

So what?

For new websites, we cannot immediately enter page 1 if we are targeting keywords with high competition. It took months. Therefore we need long tail keywords.

By targeting long tail keywords, we can quickly enter page 1 even without any backlinks at all..…because the competition is low.

After many people enter the first page and get lots of visitors, Google will judge our website as trusted. Next, we are able to get rankings for more difficult keywords. To find long tail keywords that have high search volume and low competition, we need Long Tail Pro to make it easier.

3. Term Explorer – analyze many keywords at once

The basic function is similar to Long Tail Pro, namely searching for keywords and evaluating competition.

The difference: Term Explorer is web-based, while Long Tail Pro is desktop software. Long Tail Pro is paid once for life, Term Explorer per month. Because of its features, I will not re-explain. This is a screenshot of the list of keywords found from Term Explorer:

Because it is web-based, Term Explorer is better for those of you who have a slow internet connection. It’s their server that carries out the evaluation, not your computer.

4. MozBar or SEOQuake – for those who prefer manual

These two tools are browser extensions for Chrome and Firefox. Both are free and almost the same features.

MozBar and SEOQuake will display data such as the number of backlinks, Page Authority, Domain Authority, and others when we search on Google. This can be used to get good keywords…

…but not automatically, because you have to do individual searches on Google.

Before we go into the next section regarding keyword competition analysis, it’s a good idea to install one of MozBar and SEOQuake. It’s even better if you use SEMRush, Long Tail Pro, or Term Explorer.
